Welcome to the Autumn-Winter 2008/2009 season in

The Menuhin Hall and to an extremely exciting and varied programme of concerts and events.

Over the past two and a half years, The Menuhin Hall has firmly established its reputation as an unique venue in the South East of England for both concerts and recordings. Artists such as the late Mstislav Rostropovich, Jeremy Menuhin, Tasmin Little, John Williams, Dame Evelyn Glennie, Steven Isserlis, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Sir James Galway, and Cliff Richard have graced our stage, and the new season brings more outstanding musicians to Stoke d’Abernon.

The great pianist András Schiff will perform a Beethoven recital on November 14th. András was a close associate of Lord Menuhin and has been a staunch supporter of the School. He gave an extraordinary fund-raising concert with the School’s Orchestra at the Sheldonian Oxford in 2003, when the plans for The Menuhin Hall were still on the drawing board. It is a real joy and privilege to welcome him to perform in the Hall for the first time.

Other celebrities include Emma Johnson, Julian Lloyd Webber and John Lill performing as a trio on September 22nd, and past-pupil Nicola Benedetti on November 8th. The mezzo soprano Rosalind Plowright will be on stage with Richard Stilgoe alongside pupils from the School for a special fundraising concert for The Prince’s Trust on November 19th.

The pupils of The Yehudi Menuhin School will feature in the many Showcase Concerts and in addition, past pupil Alina Ibragimova will take part in a special two-day Bachfest early in 2009. Other concerts include, the Cobham Band, The Grange’s Christmas Fundraising concert and Acoustic Triangle, presented by Watemill Jazz, as part of the Mole Valley District Council’s Arts Alive Festival.

The Hall has received the following awards:

–            Winner: RIBA Award 2006 South East Category

–            Winner: BCIA 2006 (British Construction Industry Awards – Small Building Project)

–            Finalist: Wood Awards 2006 (Commercial & Public Access projects)

–            Commendation: Civic Trust Awards 2008

The great pianist, András Schiff is loved and admired by both musicians and audiences all over the world. As soloist, as chamber music performer, and, more recently, as conductor, he is universally recognised as one of the great exponents of classical music of his generation. He has won numerous international accolades; in 2006, he became an Honorary Member of the Beethoven House in Bonn, and last year he won the Italian ‘Premio della critica musicale Franco Abbiata’ prize. Both these awards recognise his wonderful performances of Beethoven’s piano works, and we are delighted that he is to perform an all-Beethoven programme in this concert.
